Domestic occurs in every country, culture and age group. It affects people of all socioeconomic levels, religious affiliations, and educational backgrounds. The impact of domestic violence is far-reaching and invasive, impacting families, children and the community. In this presentation, we will set forth the components of domestic violence and the difficulties associated with assessing and treating it. Treatment approaches, safety planning, appropriateness of individual and conjoint sessions, and the therapist stance are discussed. We review ways to help couples communicate more effectively early in their relationship; address the issues which lead to angry and violent outbursts; place responsibility where it belongs to decrease the likelihood of intimate partner abuse and increase the probability of an equitable and cohesive relationship.
