With the rise in obesity rates in the United States, the physical health risks and psychological contributors are coming under increased focus. This presentation will describe the negative effects that obesity has on a child's self-esteem and body image, and the environmental circumstances that make this health disorder more prevalent. Tools in assessment, including medical and nutritional referrals are described; psychological interventions that address motivation, behavioral strategies and emotional function of overeating are also explored. Also included are ways that therapists can mobilize public health initiatives to help clients.
