Almost all mental health professionals, regardless of their work settings, will at some point in their career encounter child abuse or neglect situations. By law, mental health professionals are mandated to report suspected child abuse and neglect. There is a wide range of issues pertaining to child abuse/neglect intervention, which includes identification, assessment, reporting, and treatment. For these reasons, it is critical that mental health professionals be informed about the principles and strategies helpful in these areas. This CE course covers historical perspectives, an overview, four types of child abuse, therapist's responses (including reporting, assessment, and therapy), and issues of countertransference.

California law requires all LCSW, LMFT, LPCC and LEP licensees to complete continuing education (CE) prior to each active status license renewal. This course meets the one-time 7-hour requirement for continuing education in Child Abuse Assessment and Reporting set forth by the BBS.

Bio: Jennifer Kolb, LCSW; Social Work Consultant, reviewed and determined the course meets requirements for continuing education in the field of social work. This course is appropriate for masters and clinical level social workers. Jennifer graduated with a Master’s degree in Social Work with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisville, Kentucky. She specializes in school-based psychotherapy with children and adolescents, as well as licensing exam coaching and preparation.

Course Description: This course will provide a comprehensive guide for understanding HIV and AIDS related prevention measures, acquisition and transmission processes, treatment approaches, psychoeducation areas, and psychotherapeutic considerations.

This course meets the initial continuing education renewal requirements as specified by the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) for California licensed marriage and family therapists, licensed clinical social workers, and licensed professional clinical counselors. The course content is consistent with the requirements identified in Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations (16CCR), section 1887.3 (c).

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define HIV and AIDS, and explain the distinction between the two. 
  2. List three global statistics provided by WHO in 2021, state the current rates of HIV transmission, and make an accurate statement about trends in rates of transmission over the past decade.
  3. Identify three of the most significant risk factors for HIV/AIDS and list three ways in which HIV may be acquired.
  4. Identify three different medical methods for detecting and monitoring HIV/AIDS.
  5. Identify and explain two psychosocial considerations and cultural considerations pertaining to treatment of clients with HIV/AIDS.
  6. Explain three ongoing considerations that are unique to this demographic group (e.g., monitoring suicidal tendencies).
  7. Generate three meaningful, accurate, and client-focused clinical applications for working with clients with HIV/AIDS. 
  8. Explain three different medical approaches for treatment of clients with HIV/AIDS.

Course Completion Requirements:

Attendees must be present for the duration of the training as evidenced by the attendance report generated by Zoom, as well as complete the course evaluation to receive a certificate of credit.

The course evaluation is accessible in your student account. After completing the training, log into your GGS student account to complete the course evaluation. 

How certificate is issued:

Upon verification of attendance and completion of the course evaluation, each participant will be able to access a personal CE certificate of attendance in their student account.
