Therapists are typically trained to support others in their own struggle with traumatic experiences, but in this workshop, participants will learn to understand the role of trauma in our own professional experience. This course defines vicarious trauma and the impact of burnout on our ability to work objectively and ethically with clients. It outlines the types of clients and reported experiences as well as therapist characteristics that tend to increase the chances of vicarious trauma. The profession itself has various support systems built into professional management which serve to protect against vicarious trauma, e.g., supervision, peer supervision and education. This presentation provides equal, if not more, information about the importance of self-care and how to integrate these practices into professional development.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify indicators of vicarious trauma and PTSD.
  2. Plan strategies for debriefing and managing counter-transference issues as they arise.
  3. Utilize and practice self-care techniques to prevent burn-out.
