In a culture bombarded by images of youth and beauty, many feel the pressure to live up to this ideal. The impact on self-esteem can be potentially devastating. In this course we explore how culture affects our personal views of beauty; the ways in which different populations are affected by the pressures to be young and beautiful; the clinical implications of poor body image on clients; and the true sources of self-esteem. In addition, we present specific methods to facilitate healthy self-esteem in clients, to not only improve body image, but to improve all facets of a healthy self-image.

  2. Describe the unique challenges facing different populations in terms of beauty and body image.
  3. Identify specific clinical concerns associated with clients’ dealing with poor body image.
  4. Incorporate interventions into treatment for building self-esteem in clients.
