Neuropsychology investigates how the brain’s structure and function give rise to emotion, thought, memory, motivation, attention, and self-control – the processes that constitute the mind. Though some brain regions specialize in different tasks, most neural processes require coordination and cooperation between many different brain regions. The aim of clinical neuropsychology is to assess cognitive functions in patients who demonstrate cognitive or behavioral problems, and to gain a better understanding of underlying physical causes of these pathologies. There is a growing body of research dedicated to the plasticity of the mind. That is, the ability for anyone to create and strengthen neuronal connections in the brain through practice and repetition. This plasticity can be a powerful alternative to treating emotional and psychological disorders.
