Group Therapy Online Text-based Course (2 CE)

Group therapy is becoming a more widely used modality, partly due to managed health care costs and influence on mental health care, but also because it can be used to treat a wide range of client needs. This course describes a variety of groups suitable to different types of clients, as well as theoretical orientations for groups. It presents the factors that are important to an effective group, including setting ground rules, encouraging self-disclosure, group size, and client selection/retention/drop-outs and termination. In addition, because groups contain multiple members with multiple needs, the role of the therapist and legal and ethical concerns are discussed for the maintenance of boundaries, conflict management, and countertransference.
