In this presentation, we explore the formal diagnostic criteria and typical presenting symptoms of eating disorders, and delineate the differential diagnoses between eating disorders and other clinical syndromes. We identify the various mental health professionals who interact with this population, evaluate the appropriateness of different treatment settings, and set forth a variety of theoretical lenses and models (e.g., psychodynamic, systems, feminist, behavioral) that conceptualize assessment and treatment procedures. Also presented are treatment issues for special populations, including children, males, and clients for whom self-injury or suicide is present.
