Choosing the Right CEU Without the Hassle

Have you ever completed a CEU online only to realize that it wasn’t the right one you needed? Have you ever spent a lot of money on a CEU only to find out that your licensing board wouldn’t accept it? There are many horror stories of clinicians who have spent time purchasing and completing CEUs that won’t count towards their licensure needs. Here are a few thoughts on how you can choose the right CEU without the hassle.

Always, Always, Always Read the Fine Print

Don’t fall in love with a CEU provider because of their excellent website and promo codes. It’s great that they have a visually appealing site, however, look at the fine print. National or state boards do not approve some of these CEU companies. Don’t jump in feet first without reading the fine print.

If it Looks Too Good to be True, Do Your Research

Some online CEU providers offer packages stating that it has all the courses you need for your licensure, along with extra for your learning pleasure. The cost is high, but you think, “this has everything in one package.” Don’t purchase these packages until you have checked to ensure your licensing board approves the CEU provider. If the packages have all the needed courses and more, it will be useless if they aren’t accepted.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

If you wait until the day or even a few days before you must complete your CEUs, you may feel pressured to buy the first courses that you see. If you haven’t been keeping up with your CEU requirements mark your calendar 2-3 months ahead of your due dates. This will be a reminder to begin the CEU process and give you plenty of time to pick the right ones.

An Easy Solution

The quickest way to guarantee that the CEU company you want to buy from is legitimate and that their courses are approved, is by looking at your state board website. Often, they will list their approved providers and make recommendations of which to use. This is a fail-proof way to ensure you are choosing the right CEU.

Don’t make the CEU process harder than it must be. Also, look back at your history to see if there are any CEUs you have taken that you haven’t counted. Don’t forget also to submit any teaching or presentations you have given. In many states, these are accepted as CEUs. Choosing the right CEU doesn’t have to be a hassle when you plan ahead of time and ensure your provider is approved.
