A significant number of U.S. adults regularly engage in consensual sexual behaviors that involve the infliction of pain or intense sensation, the use of restraint, and power exchange. These behaviors are commonly known by the acronym BDSM: Bondage & Discipline (B/D), Domination & Submission (D/s), and Sadism & Masochism (S&M). The goal of this course is twofold: First, to provide an accurate understanding of BDSM activities, culture, and history; and second, to discuss clinical issues pertaining to people who engage in BDSM and to present guidelines for working with this population.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define BDSM and its common elements
  2. Explain common BDSM terms
  3. Articulate safety elements with BDSM clients
  4. Follow and practice ethical considerations
  5. Implement 3 steps to avoid bias with BDSM clients and provide culturally sensitive care
