This course explores the issues counselors encounter while working with Asian-American clients, the fastest growing minority group in the United States. The course examines the diversity of the Asian-American community and discusses how socioeconomic background, generational differences, spiritual values, gender and sex roles, and sexual orientation can contribute to each client's unique identity within an Asian-American framework. This presentation also outlines strategies for better cross-cultural communication through tools such as collaborative goal setting, empathy, and cultivating curiosity. Other topics discussed include the "Collectivism vs. Individualism" paradigm, racism and discrimination, shame issues, and culture-bound syndrome.
