California BBS LPCC Licensure Paths

The state of California is accepting applications for the new license category of Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCC), regulated by the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). As this is a new licensing category, requirements and timelines are being updated quite often. Please check the BBS website for the latest information.

In addition to educational requirements in core content areas, candidates must have completed a specific number of hours of advanced training in eight subject areas (see the California Association for Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors for more information). Gerry Grossman Seminars is pleased to offer coursework satisfying seven of these eight additional areas.

FLASH: The BBS window for applying for licensure through the Grandparenting path closed on December 31, 2011. Those California MFTs and LCSWs who applied during that time are required to take a "gap exam" in order to be licensed as LPCCs.
Gerry Grossman Seminars is pleased to offer our LPCC Gap Exam Workshop for those wishing to take the gap exam. This course is being led by Elizabeth Still, MFT, LPCC, the first person to take and pass the LPCC gap exam. Click here to be kept informed about the exam and how we can help you prepare for it.
We are also pleased to offer you our gap exam study materials in book form.

The BBS has outlined the two remaining paths you may follow to licensure:

The Out-of-State Licensing Path
Those individuals who hold a LPCC-equivalent license in another state, or have education and/or experience gained in another state, have a potential path outside of the traditional path towards LPCC licensure. This path is open until December 31, 2013, when application requirements for out-of-state license holders will change. Please see the BBS website for exact information.

Individuals who follow the “out-of-state” path, along with having fulfilled specific educational requirements in their degree program, will also have to have completed the entire list of specialized training to be eligible for licensure examinations. Our coursework provides much of that training.

The In-State Traditional License Path
According to the BBS website, now that the “grandparenting” period has expired, "... the path to licensure will more closely resemble a traditional licensure path for applicants without LPCC-equivalent licensure or supervised work experience gained out-of-state. For example, potential licensees will earn a qualifying degree, register as a professional clinical counselor intern, earn the required supervised work experience, pass the required licensing examination(s) and earn the license."

The BBS educational requirements are set to change at specific times, so see their website for current requirements and timeframes. As in the other paths, though, the BBS will require LPCC candidates to fulfill the entire list of post-degree specialized training, and Gerry Grossman Seminars will be offering coursework that provides most of that training.
